Facebook Denies Testing Places In The UK – But It Looks Close Is Facebook testing its location based service Places for imminent rollout in the UK? Notes on Twitter started to surface over the weekend indicating that might be the case. And as you can see from this screengrab from @kierondonoghue on Saturday, it did work for a short time. However, we've checked with Twitter's official spokespeople and they say "We weren't testing it this weekend contrary to reports." And a simple check of the iPhone app reveals that even if some people can access their location via mobile in the UK, most can't. So there you go. But, the imminent arrival of Facebook Places in the UK and across the rest of Europe is clearly going to have an interesting impact not least on local location-based startups who already compete with Foursquare and Gowalla, to name the two main US players whose services have migrated to Europe.

Nokia N8 launches September 30, says senior manager Tapani Kaskinen is Nokia's Senior Comms Manager, so it's fitting that he'd be the first person from the company to communicate a solid release date for its long-awaited N8 handset. The gent in question told Finnish newspaper Kauppalehti that advance orders of the N8 will "begin shipping 30 September." Bear in mind we're chewing through a machine translation here, but that part's pretty unmistakable. It also meshes perfectly with earlier speculation surrounding Nokia purchasing Google AdWords -- that indicated a one-week exclusive starting on September 23rd for Nokia's UK online store, which, if you do the math, again points to a wide release at the end of the month. We asked Nokia about it ourselves and they're remaining mum on the matter, but chances are looking pretty good that October will start with the N8 finally in eager users' hands.Nokia N8 launches September 30, says senior manager originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 06 Sep 2010 08:01:00 EDT. Samsung N350 throws LTE and HSPA+ into an intriguing new netbook proposition Yeah, we thought netbooks were old news too, but if they all start strapping up with the latest in 4G connectivity, we might have to give them another look. The Samsung N350 is just such a machine, with dual-mode LTE and HSPA+ built in. You won't be surprised that almost everything else is par for the affordable laptop market course: a dual-core Atom N550 CPU, that boilerplate 1,024 x 600 resolution on a 10.1-inch matte screen, 250GB of storage, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, a multicard reader, and a trifecta of USB ports. The basic wireless options are keeping up with modernity, however, with 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0 on board, both of which are nice to see. The 3-cell battery should last up to 6.7 hours and the whole package is expected to retail for €429 ($553) in Germany this autumn. You can probably expect a rebadge under the Go label for the US and a relatively swift launch over here as well. Aussie judge makes ban on PSJailbreak USB dongle permanent Last month I mentioned that a new USB dongle called PS Jailbreak had surfaced that promised to jailbreak your PS3 without having it open the chassis or void your warranty. The flash drive plugged into the USB port on the PS3 and hacked the console to allow you to play games off the hard drive directly.
Sony was fast to fight the dongle in Australia with a court battle that resulted in a preliminary injunction against the sale of the PS Jailbreak dongle. The preliminary injunction was issued on August 27 in Australia.
The judge has now come back and made the injunction on the PSJailbreak dongle permanent baring it from sale in Australia. The bad news for Sony is that the software code for a hack that works the same way is now available free on the internet meaning Sony just got pwned.

HTC HD3 out in 9 days Countdown begins for what we already know The HTC HD3, which was leaked in March, will be formally revealed to the world on September 15. The beast is likely to have a 1.5 GHz processor and a 4.5 inch display and will be shown off in London according to our source in the Queen Vic Pub.
HTC will use the same event to unveil a new 2.2 running Desire and an Android tablet. The early leaks are proving to be right, our sauce claims. It will still have a 4.5" display, only now it is AMOLED (1200x800).
It will have a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, WiFi, 4G and 32 GB of storage, an 8 MP camera and 2 LED flashes. Word on the street is that it will run Windows Phone 7, and launch first in Down Under.

ExoPC Slate 64GB up for pre-order If you have been following the cool ExoPC Slate tablet computer that we have been, covering for a while now it is getting closer to reality. As of the September 4, the ExoPC Slate is up for pre-order in 64GB flavor. The pre-order process is a bit different from most we have seen; you have to sign up on the ExoPC forums to be able to access the pre-order link.
The company points out that the pre-order process is launching before the final product is ready and there is a bit of bad news. The Slate was expected to have GPS, but the 64GB version on pre-order will not offer GPS. ExoPC says that GPS is not working with the current provider and if they can’t get it working, the final product will lack GPS.
The company hasn’t ruled out fixing whatever the issue is through so GPS is a question mark right now. The pre-order price has been cut a bit in light of the fact that GPS is unknown. The price will be 749 CAD and if GPS is fixed in time for the slate to ship the price will remain. The SSD inside the 64GB version is from SanDisk making it very fast.

Dyson Air Multiplier knock off surfaces In October of 2009 Dyson, the guy famous for new vacuums pulled the wraps off a new fan that has no blades called the Air Multiplier. The fan was cool and all, but the thing was very expensive with a smaller desktop version of the fan selling for $299.
That is a lot of scratch for a fan and I bet there were many folks that liked the idea of the bladeless fan, but wished it were cheaper. A knock off of the Air Multiplier has surfaced made by an Asian company called Abiko. The fan was on display at the Comex 2010 booth the company had.
The Abiko fan looks almost just like the Dyson offering with a different style intake vent and the lack of the Dyson logo being the only major visuals differences between the two. The Abiko fan is not that much cheaper though at $223. CNET News reports that the Abiko knock off can be found for about $50 each at wholesale. I might pay $50 for one, but at $223 they can keep it.

Most rumours believe this is the HTC 'Vision' or 'Vanguard' that may well get its opening at the 15 September HTC Press announcement. Last spotted a few months ago the 'Vision/Vanguard' is rumoured to have a 1.2GHz processor and either be running Android 2.2 or even Android 3.0.

We recently also wrote a story about the possible launch of a Wndows Phone 7 handset also coming from HTC: the HD7. Whether both these handsets will feature in HTC's announcement isn't clear, but with these pictures showing it adorned in the Verizon colours it looks like this will more likely be focused on a US release rather than heading our way. Of course don't take our word on it, stay posted next week for all of HTC's official announcement.

Apple's Ping tops 1 million users in opening 48 hours Apple’s social networking platform launched last week for inclusion in the latest version of iTunes, iTunes 10.0, has reached one million users in the opening 48 hours the Cupertino Company has claimed.
Unveiled during last Wednesday’s ‘Special Event’ in California alongside an update Apple TV and the new range of iPod devices, Ping is a social network for music allowing users to follow their favourite artists and friends, gaining an insight into the music being listened to and downloaded.

As many more people download iTunes 10 in the coming weeks, we expect the Ping community to continue growing.”
Having launched less than a week ago, Apple’s Ping service has already encountered a number of issues as spammers targeted the social networking outlet shortly after it was revealed that Ping had butted heads with the King of social networking Facebook during negotiations prior to launch.

Can Wikileaks Afford To Back The Undiplomatic Julian Assange? "He’s a classic Aussie in the sense that he’s a bit of a male chauvinist.” That quote comes at the end of a piece on the recent escapades of Julian Assange, founder and chief spokesman for Wikileaks. It seems apt, because it's becoming increasingly clear that an organisation which aspiries to transparency and the high ideals of open information is going to have problems going forward if it continues to entertain an individual who lacks transparency and whose private life is alleged by his female accuses to be be riddled with low ideals. Because let's be clear, delicate diplomancy and skirting the choppy waters of international issues which involve thousands of lives - like releasing highly sensitive government information about the Iraq war - is not the kind of thing you want someone who is careless about their personal life to take charge of. How would you react if you heard this story: A guy sleeps with two women in quick succession, annoys both with his sexual habits, they talk but he dismisses their concerns. When they go to the Police he calls it an "international conspiracy". Uh... what?

Creative Sound Blaster Wireless MultiPlay System untethered from FCC Here we go again. Another FCC filing of an unannounced product, this time in the form of Creative's Sound Blaster Wireless MultiPlay system. We're looking at a trio of new products including the MultiPlay Transmitter with its USB extension dock, a rather clunky looking Touch Controller (that we've seen before) resembling an old Sonos CR100, and Wireless Receiver. The idea here is to attach the transmitter to your PC and install the Creative Music Server software, connect the receiver to a pair of amplified speakers and then control the whole kit with the supplied controller. You can even push the audio out to Creative's existing wireless speakers or headphones as long as you don't exceed four devices in total. The transmitter and receivers pair automatically when turned on and you can attach additional audio devices (like an old CD player) for broadcast via a 3.5-mm stereo cable. Creative's pitching this as a multi-room solution with the ability to setup and then control zones of music throughout your house over a 2.4GHz connection. In other words, don't expect it to be very robust -- not when the user manual explicitly warns: "Refrain from doing large file transfers via the wireless internet or Bluetooth connection while you are streaming music." Expect it to be cheap though.Gallery: Creative Sound Blaster Wireless MultiPlay System untethered by FCC

LG and Best Buy to show off 3D TVs at FedEx field during college football game today The public hasn’t responded nearly as well to 3D TVs as many manufacturers of the sets had hoped. Many TV makers expected people to rush to buy the sets for their homes and that just hasn’t happened mostly because of the high cost, the need for glasses, and the lack of 3D programming.
LG and Best Buy are teaming up to show college football fans that are watching the game today between Boise State and Virginia Tech at FedExField what they are missing The partners will be putting 300 LG 3D TVs in the stadium for people at the live game today to watch. Best Buy kiosks on the club level of the stadium will available too.
Those Best Buy Kiosks will be built around eight 55-inch LG Infinia LX9500 screens with Best Buy staffers to answer questions. Am I the only one who finds it odd that they are setting up 3D kiosks for watching the game in 3D for people who are already at the game? Those kiosks would be better in stores for people not at the game I think.

Nuu drops interesting iPhone clamshell with keyboard at IFA 2010 Back when the original iPhone launched for the first few weeks I though the onscreen keyboard really sucked. Then I became used to it and now I can type faster on the onscreen keyboard than a real one. If you never got used to that onscreen keyboard, an interesting case surfaced at IFA from a company called Nuu.
The device is called the Mini Key and it is a case that promises to fix the antenna issue the iPhone 4 suffers from, protect the phone, and it adds a physical keyboard as well. The iPhone becomes a fat clamshell phone when inside the case and you can flip it open to access the keyboard for typing messages and notes.
The keyboard has raised keys in the familiar QWERTY layout. The thing uses Bluetooth to connect to the iPhone and has a HID compliant Broadcom chip inside and it runs off a rechargeable internal lithium-ion battery. The price for the case is $69 and it should be in stores in time for Christmas.

Allowing users to share content via Facebook and Twitter the new iPlayer service has already proved popular with users as more than 18,000 people signed up to the beta version, watching more content over the new edition and creating a staggering 700,000 likes or favourites through the new social networking updates during this trial period.
Speaking on the cause of the update, the BBC has claimed: “The impetus for change has come from two directions: firstly, we have a long-term plan to constantly evolve the site for the benefit of our audiences. A main theme here is personalisation - simply put, a way to get the programmes you love with less clicking (and thinking!). Secondly, we wanted to connect BBC iPlayer up with the users' online interactions with friends - to bring a social dimension to watching and listening.”
The Beeb’s blog went on to add: “It's been an exciting project with many challenges, both design and engineering, along the way.”

O2 updates Dell Streak to Android 2.1 Geeks in the UK that bought the Dell Streak on the O2 network have a new Android update that can be added to the device. The new update takes the Streak to Android 2.1. There are a few steps that you need to take before applying the update, lest you lose all your data.
O2 points out that any data not stored on an SD card will be erased during the update. Apps will have to be downloaded again from the Downloads tab in the Android Market says O2. The carrier also suggests downloading an app for the Android Market that can back up your SMS messages, contacts and other important items on the phone.
The update can be started manually via settings, about phone, system update on the Streak. The first page of the update process reminds again that data will be deleted with the update. Once the update is downloaded, the user will be promoted to start the install, which takes about 15 minutes.

Apple to up iPad production to meet demand Generally when a device is hard to buy in stores it’s due to higher popularity. Once you can walk in and buy whatever gadget you are wanting in the store it generally signals that the device isn’t as popular as it was at one point. However, when it comes to the iPad availability doesn’t mean low demand.
According to analyst Katy Huberty from Morgan Stanly, Apple is set to pump production of its iPad up to 3 million units per month during the holiday shopping season. That will be an increase for the 2 million units per month Apple is already building.
The 2 million unit per month mark was able to get that once long shipping delay at the Apple store down to 24-hour ship time. Apple is still selling all of the devices it builds. Some analysts expect Apple to sell every iPad they build even at 3 million per month and expectations are that Apple could ship as many as 10 million iPads this year alone.

HTC HD3 becomes HD7 and gets Oct release date? A tech website has managed to get hold of a leaked spreadsheet from network carrier O2 which has pointed towards the incoming release of an HTC HD7. This is the name for what was originally called the HD3, but due to the operating system it'll be carrying this seems more appropriate.
Running Windows Phone 7, the HD7 has presumably jumped the numbers from the previous HD2 to keep it in line with the new mobile operating system. Specs on the device are numerous yet unconfirmed at the moment but with HTC making a supposed product launch in the next few weeks it's a fairly good guess that this will be it.

The main problem with this kind of information is that it is easily forgeable and so one has to keep a certain amount of skepticism until either a release or something more solid appears. For the moment however, this is the best bet we have as to the mystery device and it's inpending arrival.

Google open sources more of the Wave Wave in a Box Search engine outfit Google might have pulled the plug on its Wave product, but in response to user cries of foul at its passing has open sourced more of the code. Dubbed Wave in a Box, Google says that it is going to include an application bundle with a server and web client.
Apparently it will support collaboration using the same structure as Wave. It will also give API support and the ability to support the integration of wave data from wave.google.com.
Although few people were interested in Wave, the feeling is that Google should have let it live a bit longer. Open sourcing it means that developers who want to play with it can set it up to run itself.

Samsung hints that Galaxy Tab will cost $200 to $400 Samsung’s Galaxy Tab has been making the rounds for a while now with more and more information about the tablet coming forward. One of the key bits of info that we still aren’t 100% on is the price of the tablet.
Samsung is hinting that the Galaxy Tab will sell in the $200 to $400 range. That is a very large range and which end of that scale the price comes in at will have a lot to do with the success of the Tab. I would bet we are looking at the higher end of that scale in the $350 range.
Surely, Samsung will bring the thing in at a price considerably less than the iPad. The Galaxy Tab is also said to be coming to Vodafone over in the UK. The reason for the large range in pricing is that the final price depends on carrier subsidies for the Tab. I say $400 and a contract will be hard to swallow for many geeks.

Vodafone has today announced that it will be offering the tablet in the UK, with the device showing up in the ‘Coming Soon’ section of the network’s website. There’s no word on price or a concrete release date, but rumour circulating the web is that the Galaxy Tab will touch down on October 11th.
In the US the device is rumoured to be around $200-$300, but European price rumours are higher. The price of the device here is said to be around the £400 mark, but networks – like Vodafaone – are likely to subsidise this cost in lieu of a monthly data contract.
We’ll keep you updated with news as we get it. In the mean time, let us know if you’re keen on the Samsung Galaxy Tab via the T3 Twitter feed.

The Torch, RIM's first ever slider smartphone which runs on BlackBerry OS 6, has already been available in the US since August, and a number of UK retail sites suggest it will be in stores in October.
Despite packing a 3.2-inch 480x360 touch-based screen, a slide-out keyboard, and a 5 megapixel camera with flash, amongst its most notable features, sales of the Torch in the US have been considered relatively low key. RIM will be hoping its entry into the UK market will re-ignite some appeal for its latest handset.

iPad tests FaceTime ahead of dual camera inclusion update Unfazed by the excitement surrounding the latest fleet of tablet devices to be announced during IFA last week, Apple has reclaimed top tablet talking honours as a tantalising leaked image shows the iPad testing the company’s video calling service, FaceTime.
The blurry shot released by 9 to 5 Mac further boosts the already rapidly circulating rumours that the next generation iPad will be on the receiving end of a front and rear camera makeover as well as adopting Apple’s FaceTime video calling feature during the annual product cycle in January.

The debug screen, which is similar to those spotted shortly before the iPhone 4 was launched earlier this summer, suggests that Apple’s tablet device is to offer the same FaceTime service as the latest iPhone incarnation and the recently updated iPod Touch due for release this week.
Whilst dual cameras were already amongst the hottest tipped additions to the iPad for version 2.0, the inclusion of video calling would see the Apple tablet match the capabilities of the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Tab, the first true competitor to the iPad’s tablet crown.
What features would you like to see the upcoming Apple iPad 2 fitted with? Share your ideas with us via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

AMD's upcoming Cayman XT pixellized Still features ATI branding The guys from Chiphell.com managed to score what is claimed to be a working prototype of AMD's Radeon HD 6000 Series graphics card codenamed "Cayman XT." According to the info, the pixellized card is the XT version of the Cayman chip and should be the Radeon HD 6x70 series card, at least if AMD sticks to the rumoured naming scheme.
Unfortunately, the picture doesn't reveal much solid information rather than some speculaction that the card might be as long as the Radeon HD 5870, should have CrossFireX support, and has two DVI ports, an HDMI port and two mini-DisplayPort connectors. The post didn't reveal any other specifications, except that we are looking at a GPU made on TSMC's 40nm manufacturing process.
An interesting detail is that the prototype still proudly carries the ATI brand sticker, something that AMD will probably throw away soon enough. In any case, it looks like more info regarding AMD's Radeon HD 6000 Series family has finally started to trickle out, which means that we'll see more surface very soon.
The thread can be found here.

Samsung excuses absence of Super AMOLED on Galaxy Tab with Super TFT (video) A Super AMOLED 7-inch tablet was highly unlikely to ever materialize in a marketable form, but that didn't stop many of us from dreaming about one. Consequently, there was palpable disappointment when Samsung failed to deliver on our unicorn hallucinations with the Galaxy Tab, but the company says not to worry. The Tab's 7 inches of glorious visuals are being handled by a Super TFT panel, surely the Korean company's answer to Sony's Super LCD. It's a screen technology that has been developed "alongside" Super AMOLED and just so happens to offer better battery performance and an obvious saving in cost. We're usually inclined to consider such moves cynical marketing ploys -- keep the Super branding, drop the actual super hardware -- but the SLCD display on the HTC Desire gives us faith that perhaps TFTs really can be souped up. Video after the break.Continue reading Samsung excuses absence of Super AMOLED on Galaxy Tab with Super TFT (video)
